He was a proud graduate of Old Town High School, class of 1952; participating in football, baseball and track. After graduating from high school, Lin married Josephine Taylor on September 25, 1954. Together they raised seven children on French Island. Working for The Pie Plate, Lin was employed by UPS for 23 years, serving as one of the original drivers in Maine. While at UPS, he was awarded several distinguished driving awards; Lin especially enjoyed delivering packages to his hometown. Upon retirement from UPS, Birmingham Funeral Home benefited from Lin's compassionate and caring service to his community. Lin loved working with his hands, spending countless hours in his workshop, crafting everything from doll houses to intricate transportation-related vehicles, and was happy to share them with friends and family. In the mid-1970s Lin earned his private pilot's license, then purchased the first of three airplanes, one of which he built himself. Lin shared his passion for flying with a local airplane building club.
Lin is survived by wife of nearly 67 years, Josephine "Jo" Taylor; sons, Mark and husband, Steve, Tony and wife, Sue, Paul and wife, Cat; daughters, Judy Smith and husband, Steve, Gail Randall Murray and husband, Ralph, Paulette Lynch and husband, John, Jo-Lynn Sturgeon and husband, Michael; grandchildren include: Travis, Ben, Troy, Nicole, Randy, Todd, Staci, Kristi, Jasmyn, Jordyn, Whitney, Lindsay, Lawrence, Melissa, Sara, Jake and Alex; along with 27 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers Harry Sanborn and his wife Laura, Carelton Sanborn and his wife Doreen, and Chellis Sanborn; and sister Hazel Severance and husband Ray. Lin enjoyed nothing more than gathering with his family where he was husband, dad, grandpa, and Pepere. Lin is also survived by his beloved cat, Lucky. His powerful, loving hugs and wonderful sense of humor will be missed by all. He was predeceased by his mother, Freda, and father, Elmer Sanborn; brother, Howard; his special great-grandmother, Mamie; and son-in-law, Steve Odenbaugh.
Relatives and friends are invited to call 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, August 5, at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, August 6, at Parish of the Resurrection, Holy Family Catholic Church, Old Town. Burial will take place at St. Joseph's Cemetery, immediately following the service.
