Mary (Drake) Ellis
ALTON—Mary (Drake) Ellis, 84, passed away May 4, 2021 at her residence. She was born in Old Town March 28, 1937 a daughter of George Sr. and Etta (Young) Drake.
Mary was a graduate of Old Town High School, Class of 1956 and married Wendell P. Ellis Sr, that same year. Mary was the mother of Christine Soucier, Susan Ellis, Juanita (Mario) Gilbert, Laurie (Eugene) Curtis and Wendall Ellis Jr.; grandmother to eleven and many beloved great grandchildren and Aunt Mary to many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 29 years Wendall P. Ellis Sr., sisters Etta (drake) Hodsdon and Madeline (Drake) Dutton and brother George Drake Jr.
Mary loved her flower gardens, particularly the roses. Her love of reading took her on many wonderful adventures and she loved to watch the Golden Girls. She also enjoyed reading the newspaper and watching the news. She had a sharp mind and an acute understanding of what was going on in the world. Mary was a thoughtful person with a generous soul. She was the last on her priority list, she taught her children and grandchildren life’s lessons, and found ways to help them through their struggles, and always opened her home to family members struggling with issues in their life. She always made time to talk with someone who needed an ear and offered good advice. She was accepting, kind, giving, selfless.
Mary was a second mother to many and they loved her dearly and appreciated her kindness. Mary was a mother, wife, grandmother, aunt and friend. Her passing leaves the world poorer for it. The sun will continue to rise and set. The stars will shine and the world will turn, but with less luster, grace and compassion. She truly made a difference for many in her life. Born on Easter, a blessing to us all.
A private funeral service will be conducted at the Alton United Methodist Church. A public graveside service will be conducted 2PM Friday May 7, 2021 at the Alton Cemetery.
