

INDIAN ISLAND--Mary Barbara Knox O’Neill, 75, was born January 11, 1947 in Milo, Maine and died quietly and peacefully on October 8, 2022 after a brief illness. She is the daughter of Donald E. Knox and Barbara Sanborn Knox Jewers.
Mary graduated from Brownville Junction High School in 1965. Following in the footsteps of her Aunt Dot Knox, she went on to earn a diploma in Nursing from Mary Hitchcock School of Nursing in 1968. Mary loved to take care of people and nursing was her lifelong passion. Mary started her nursing career at Milo Hospital. Her 45+ year career in nursing took her to Texas and Vermont and finally to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Maine where she retired as a Coronary Care Nurse in 2015. Mary was a citizen of the Penobscot Nation and took extra measures to insure that she provided extra care and comfort to other Tribal citizens. Through her love and care of her patients she developed many deep and lasting relationship
Mary was predeceased by her parents Donald and Barbara, stepfather Ralph Jewers, her grandparents and a brother-in-law Dennis Barberic. Family was very important to Mary. She is survived by and will be missed by a brother, Retired Colonel Michael R. Knox and wife Joyce, sisters Sharon Knox Barberic and Particia Knox-Nicola and husband Ralph Nicola, a very special niece and nephew, Chelsea Nicola Cummings and Darren Paul, and several other special nieces, nephews and cousins. She will be especially missed by her cats, “the Boys”, long time ride or die friends Marcia Wren and Linda Wells, her “Vermont friends” and many other long- term friends who she worked with during her many years of nursing. Mary loved to cook for her friends and family and will be missed her delicious chocolate fudge.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10AM Friday October 14, 2022 at Parish of The Resurrection of the Lord, Saint Ann’s Catholic Church Indian Island with a small reception following at the Sockalexis Arena. Mary will be buried in the spring of 2023 in Brownville Junction with her parents.
