He was born November 13, 1948 in Old Town, the son of Charles E. and Virginia (Brown) Buchanan.
He was a graduate of Old Town High School, the class of 1967. He served 4 years in the US Navy on the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany, stationed in Japan and San Francisco. After serving his country, Peter graduated from the University of Maine with an Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering. He was later employed as a surveyor for Prentiss & Carlisle, and for eleven years he was Director of Roads & Mapping, as well as Civil Defense Director for Penobscot County. In 1992 Peter became a sales representative for Texas Refinery Corp. in Fort Worth where he sold lubricants to many customers in Maine and New England for 22+ years. Peter won many prestigious awards through TRC including Top Gun Salesperson for the N.E. Region. Peter and Peg enjoyed two cruises with their special TRC family.
Peter loved all sports. He pitched a no hitter in High School and played in a softball travelling league. Peter enjoyed golfing with his wife Peg and many dear friends at Hermon Meadow Golf Course for 32 years. Peter was an avid Red Sox and New England Patriots fan. Peter and Peg hosted many Super Bowl parties at their home with neighborhood friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Virginia Buchanan.
He is survived by his wife and best friend Margaret (Peg) (Dalton) Buchanan of 39 ½ years; his loving daughter Patricia “Patti” Howard and her husband Jerry of Katy, TX; and a special grandson Daniel Peter Howard. Peter and Patti had a father/daughter bond which was unmatched. Peter and Peg enjoyed many trips to Texas to visit Patti, Jerry, and Danny where wonderful memories were made.
He is also survived by two sisters, Susan Ouellette and Jane Dubois, and a brother, John Buchanan, all of Milford, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins; as well as in-laws, Anita and Richard Lacadie of Milford, Maria Forbes of Lone Tree, IA, Nancy Rovito and her partner Bob Hitchcock of Bangor, brother-in-law Rick Dalton of Portland; and special Aunt and Uncles Beth and Frank Carr, and William Carr.
The family would like to thank Brewer Rehab and Living Center for the loving end of life care they provided Peter.
Visiting Hours will be held on Thursday, March 20, from 2 – 4 and 6 - 8pm at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main Street, Old Town. A Celebration of Life will take place on March 21 at 2:00pm at the Old Town Methodist Church with a reception to follow. Interment will take place in the spring.
