Richard A. Engstrom, 77, passed away May 22, 2013 at Togus Medical Center. He was born September 13, 1936 in Stillwater, Maine, a son of Theron G. and Edith B. Engstrom.
He grew up in Alton, Maine and left high school to join the Air Force where he served from 1953-1961. He finished high school during his time in the Air Force and served over seas and in Germany at Spangdollum Air Force Base. Richard was honorably discharged from the service after he broke his back and both legs in an airplane crash, of which he was the only survivor. He went on to a career of driving 18-wheelers from 1970-1988, working for Greenthumb, Ralston Purina and finally, Northeast Log Homes delivering log home packages. After retirement in 1988, he spent rest of his time with his children, 4-wheeling, fishing, hunting, telling stories and avidly supporting the Red Sox. Richard was also an active member of the AMVETS, a lifetime member of the VFW and a proud member of the Million Mile Accident Free Club.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Mary Ann; children, Ricky Engstrom and his wife, Diane of Indiana, Aubrey Engstrom and wife, Nancy of Arizona, Cindy Charlton and husband, Billy of Old Town, Ann-Marie Baker and husband, Tim of Alton, and Dan Engstrom and his partner, Heidi of Bradley; grandchildren, Rick, Chasity, Steven, Brooke, Tamara, Aaron, Ryan, Kristen, and Daniel Jr.; great grand children, Zoe, Judah, Ava, Ilya, and Brantley. Richard was pre-deceased by his daughter, Hilda Engstrom; and grandchildren, Erica and Felisha.
A special thank you goes to Togus VA Hospital and the doctors who cared for him, the Hospice and Palliative Care staff, his nurse, Pam Desjardins, Kelly and Dr. Jim.
Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main Rd., Old Town, where a funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday with Rev. Bruce Stevens. Burial with Military Honors to follow at Alton Cemetery.
