Bobby (Bob) Gene Medcalf, 76, of Walls, Mississippi passed away peacefully at the Mississippi State Veterans Home in Oxford, Mississippi on June 23, 2022. Bob was born to Elmer Eugene and Marie (Kirkpatrick) Medcalf on November 13, 1945 in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia while his father was serving in the United States Army. He was the middle son between two sisters who were all raised in Dexter, Missouri.
After high school, Mr. Medcalf served in the United States Navy and was proud to have been a sailor on a Naval fleet in California. After his service, Mr. Medcalf moved to Memphis, Tennessee where he began his career as an insurance agent in Memphis and surrounding areas.
Mr. Medcalf was an active member of his community and spent most of his life in DeSoto County, Mississippi. Bob was a mentor for at-risk youth through the DeSoto Sunrise Homes and participated in prison ministries in DeSoto County. He loved to take meals and treats to home-bound clients and others in need. Bob Medcalf never met a stranger, and his contributions to others throughout his community cannot be measured.
Bob was a long-time member of Minor Memorial United Methodist Church in Walls, Mississippi. He served for decades as an usher and took great pride in getting to church early to serve the congregation the best cup of coffee. He always made a special point to seek out visitors and new members to make them feel welcomed. After the Sunday church service, you could always find him in the church office counting the collection. Bob participated in the Men's Club, helped with Wednesday night meals, and served on various committees throughout the years.
Bob (or "Awesome Bob" as he was known by many) loved to fish, go for walks, piddle around in his shed, and enjoyed watching his favorite sports teams, including the Memphis Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals. He also relished his reputation for choosing socks for each family member as Christmas gifts, which was lovingly anticipated by all.
Mr. Medcalf was preceded in death by his parents Elmer Eugene and Marie (Kirkpatrick) Medcalf, grandson Erik Hunter Hall, and son-in-law Chris Camp.
Mr. Medcalf is survived by his daughters, Mitzi Hall (Gulf Shores, AL) and Ashley Camp (Memphis, TN); son, Christopher Medcalf (Horn Lake, MS); grandchildren, Alyssa Garrett (Murfreesboro, TN), Kevin Garrett (Grand Rapids, MI), Jonathon Garrett (Brentwood, TN); sisters, Dixie (Lamar) Hicks (Kansas City, MO), Lana (Tommy) Clark (Dexter, MO); numerous nieces and nephews; and an abundance of friends.
The family would like to give special recognition to the amazing staff at the Mississippi State Veterans Home who have truly loved Mr. Medcalf and treated him like family over his years as a resident there. Mr. Medcalf's life was enriched by their love and service.
