Gilbert Bruce Payne, Jr.

Olive Branch-GILBERT BRUCE PAYNE JR., 70, passed away January 20, 2013 at his home after a short battle with lung cancer. He was a 1960 graduate of Olive Branch High School and 1965 graduate of Ole Miss. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps and was a proud Viet Nam veteran. Bruce was a life long member of First Baptist Church, Olive Branch and a member of the Lion’s Den Sunday school class, choir, and a deacon for over 30 years. He worked for First Tennessee Bank for 32 years. He enjoyed collecting Coca Cola memorabilia, traveling and antiquing. Bruce was a charter member of the Olive Branch Jaycees. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bruce and Janice Payne. He is survived by his loving wife, Lelia Ross Payne; daughters, Candise Rader (Robert), Cookie Turner, and Mandy Shackelford (Greg). He also leaves eight grandchildren: Meghan, Lawson, and Katie Morgan; Sarah and Jordan Turner; and Ross, Lauren and Daniel Shackelford. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church building fund or music ministry, or to the charity of your choice in honor of Bruce Payne. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Monday evening and 12-1 p.m. Tuesday, with services beginning at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Olive Branch. Burial will be in Blocker Cemetery.
