Obituary of Glaman Newton Hughes
On Saturday, March 11, 2023, Glaman Newton Hughes, loving husband and father of five children, entered his eternal life at the age of 87. Glaman was born on December 12, 1935, in Joshua, Texas to his father, Truman Selby Hughes and mother, Gladys Oteka (Law) Hughes. Glaman received his BA from Harding University (then, Harding College). It was there that he met his future bride, the love of his life, Patricia Ann McKay. They were married on Thursday, March 26, 1959. In their nearly 64 years of marriage, Glaman and Pat raised five children while also touching the lives of many foster children. Throughout his career, Glaman worked in several occupations: working with NASA on main frame computers, radio operations, computer support services, and a multitude of ministry positions. Glaman was quick to volunteer his time and energy to help wherever there was a need. He had a passion for exploration and trying new things. Tinkering with cars, computers, and any other electronics he could get his hands on always brought out his curious nature. He took pride in participation with mission work, particularly in Mexico. Glaman also helped found the Dactylology Club during his time at Harding; learning, teaching and eventually interpreting American Sign Language. Through his middle age, Glaman thoroughly enjoyed riding with BRAT (Bicycle Ride Across Tennessee). He was always one for an adventure, whether he was biking along Scioto River Valley in Ohio, Monte Sano Mountain in Alabama, or the Haleakala Volcano in Hawaii. While Glaman had a love for exploring and travel, a heart for the Lord, his proudest accomplishment was the family he and Pat created. Through their blended family and work with fostering children, he gained a beautiful large family. He is preceded in death by his parents as well as many older relatives including his brothers Leon Hughes, Sr. and Seth Hughes. Glaman is survived by his wife Patricia, their five children, Cyndi Lesslie, Louise Harris, Garth Hughes, Tiffany Hughes and Marsha Gunter, his ten grandchildren, Bryan Austin, Juliana Austin, Holly Cannon, Natalie Hughes, Joshua Harris, Angela Cox, Brayden Gunter, Sydney Gunter, Kyndal Condiff, and Corbyn Gunter. Glaman was also survived by six great-grandchildren, Elodie Cannon, Bentley Todd, Alexis Todd, Anna Hall, Axle Condiff, Jamie Austin, and his sister, Nell Keely. While he will be missed by his earthly family, his faith brings comfort to those who share his belief in Salvation. Arrangements include a graveside service for family and friends to be held at 2pm on Wednesday, March 15th at Autumn Woods Memorial Park, 6240 Cockrum Rd, Olive Branch, MS.
