

James earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Western Kentucky University and later completed his doctorate at the University of Northern Colorado. He dedicated his life to education, beginning his career as a public school teacher before becoming a professor at the University of Mississippi. He retired in 2010 leaving a lasting impact on his students and colleagues.
An avid traveler, James loved reading books on World War II history and spending time outdoors. He was known for his curiosity, love of learning, and quiet devotion to his family.
He is survived by his wife, Sigrid Kristiansen; his daughters, Tracy (Justin) Hollander and Amanda (Chris) Ford; his grandchildren, Elizabeth (Ethan) Pattinson, Emily, Loren, Mitchell (Stephanie), and Devon (Kelsey); and Sigrid’s stepson, Mark Anthony Kinsman (Karen), and his children, Aaron and Brittany.
James was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Curtis Gilbert; his mother, Anna Mae Gilbert; and his brother, Joseph Phil Gilbert.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
A celebration of life will be held at The Inn at Ole Miss, Butler Auditorium on Saturday, January 17, 3:00-5:00, with the service at 4:00.
