

John Lewis Compton, 87, peacefully passed away to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 2, 2025, at Methodist Olive Branch. Born on January 8, 1938, in Henrietta, Texas, to John and Lena Compton, John dedicated over 20 years of service to his country in the United States Air Force, retiring with honor. During his time in service, he earned numerous commendations, including the Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon, two Vietnam Campaign Medals, and the Air Force Good Conduct Medal with a bronze oak leaf cluster.
Following his military career, John worked as an electrician at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, MS, and he took great pride in contributing to the construction of the USS Cole. He cherished living on the beautiful Mississippi coast. One of his greatest joys was taking his boat out to Ship Island, where he enjoyed creating memories with his friends and family. After the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, John and his beloved wife, Sun, relocated to North Mississippi, where they built a life together filled with love and laughter. John lived on the golf course and spent countless hours collecting golf balls, amassing several full buckets over time.
He also treasured his annual family trip to Gulf Shores, a time when the family would come together to enjoy each other's company. John found joy in life’s simplest pleasures, most notably in the time spent with his wife, children, and grandchildren. His unwavering love for his family and his joyful spirit will be remembered by all who had the privilege to know him.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sandra Compton; his parents, John L Compton, and Lena Dell Herron, and seven siblings: Ruby Sanders, Horace Compton, Hesta Lee Bratton, Billy Compton, Kathleen Headrick, Clyde Compton, and Charles Compton.
John leaves behind his wife of 47 years, Sun Compton; 6 children: Christina Arnold, Sean Compton, Danny Compton, Barbara Compton, John Carl Compton, and David Compton. He also left behind 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at 12:30 pm with visitation beginning at 10:30 at Brantley Funeral Home, 6875 Cockrum St. Olive Branch, Ms 38654. Burial will follow at 2:30 pm at West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 4000 Forest Hill Irene Rd. Memphis, TN.
