John Joseph Schelly, Sr., 72, of Olive Branch, MS, passed away Tuesday October 5, 2021. An avid golfer, Mr. Schelly was a man of many interests and talents and was a 33rd degree Mason. A lover of all things New Orleans, Mr. Schelly enjoyed everything that encompassed the city of New Orleans including Mardi Gras and anything fleur de lis. His favorite candy, pralines, even highlighted his enjoyment of the city. One would be remiss if they did not mention Mr. Schelly’s love for his community and his family. He was always willing to give to those in need and greatly enjoyed giving back to his community through programs such as “Shop with a Cop.” Professionally, John’s life could be summed up in one phrase….”Bugs and Thugs.” Mr. Schelly was President of the Memphis Pest Control Association and had worked for numerous pest control companies including Terminix, Jameson Pest Control, and All-State Pest. He also worked for multiple law enforcement agencies including the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department, the Byhalia Police Department, and the Olive Branch Police Department. Time would not allow to mention all of the accolades and awards John received for his years of service in Pest Control and Law Enforcement. The Schelly's were members of First Baptist Church of Olive Branch and former members of New Prospect Baptist Church. Mr. Schelly is survived by his loving wife, Rita Schelly, six children, John Joseph Schelly, Jr., Anthony J. Schelly (Teresa), Nick Lancaster (Heather), Robert Lyons (Nena), Alicia Harrison (Jeff), and Joi Gandy (Trey Britt), and an abundance of PERFECT grandchildren and PERFECT great-grandchildren. Scripture teaches that children are a gift from the Lord and blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. John was certainly blessed in this regard. Mr. Schelly is also survived by his sister, Patricia Gatti (Joseph). The family will receive friends Friday evening, October 15, 2021 from 5pm until 7pm and the funeral service will be held on Saturday morning, October 16, 2021 at 10am, all in the chapel of Brantley Funeral Home of Olive Branch. Private Interment will take place in Memorial Park Southwoods. In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to "Shop with a Cop." Checks may be sent to OBPD with "Shop with a Cop" reference at 10470 Hwy 178 Olive Branch, MS 38654. Online condolences may be expressed by visiting www.brantleyfuneral.com.
