Juanita Sloan

Mrs. Juanita Patterson Sloan, 88, of the Barton Community in Marshall County, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 27, 2026, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Collierville, surrounded by her loving family.

Juanita was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend whose greatest joy in life was the people she loved. She leaves behind a legacy of love that spans five children, ten grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Home was always the heart of Juanita’s life. When her children were growing up, it was common for the Sloan yard to be filled with neighborhood children playing from morning until evening. Juanita welcomed every one of them with a smile, a caring heart and a watchful eye. If a disagreement broke out, she had a simple remedy for restoring peace. She would sit the children down around a pan of fresh peas or beans and put everyone to shelling or snapping until tempers settled. Before long, there would be smiles and laughter again. It was just one of the many ways she quietly taught patience, kindness, and getting along with others.

Juanita was also known for her homemade biscuits, which brought family and friends eagerly to her table. She enjoyed growing large vegetable gardens and spent many summers canning vegetables to provide for her family. As the years passed, she spent more time tending to her flower beds, though she still enjoyed canning her summer vegetables

She was a longtime member of Barton United Methodist Church and was a familiar face in the community through her many years of service as an election poll worker for the Barton voting precinct, where she enjoyed visiting with neighbors and friends.

In addition to caring deeply for her own children and grandchildren, Juanita remained devoted to her brothers and sisters and their families. She faithfully stayed in touch through phone calls, checking on loved ones and welcoming news of their lives. She especially enjoyed visits from nieces and nephews and made sure everyone knew they were loved and never forgotten.

She is survived by her two daughters, Sandra Joyner (the late Doug Joyner) and Glenda Sanders (Mark); three sons, Eddie Sloan (Joanne), Tommy Sloan (Laura), and Jimmy Ray Sloan (Cindy); her grandchildren, Trey Joyner (Kelli), Beth Boland, Heath Joyner (Morgan), Heidi Sloan, Jessie Sloan (Kristen), Jeremy Sloan, Isabella Sanders, Abigail Sanders, Madalyn Sloan, and Allen Sloan; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Virginia Herndon; a sister-in-law, Sarah McClatchy; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Juanita was preceded in death by her beloved husband, J. Edward Sloan Jr.; her parents, Marshall T. Patterson and Ella Coffman Patterson; and her siblings, Jean Jones, Shirley Gavrock, Ray Patterson, and Marshall Patterson.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at 12:00 PM with visitation beginning at 10:00 AM at Brantley Funeral Home, 6875 Cockrum St. Olive Branch, MS 38654. Burial will follow at Barton Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Trey Joyner, Heath Joyner, Jessie Sloan, Jeremy Sloan, Allen Sloan and C.J. Yager.

The Sloan family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Barton Cemetery Fund at 3148 Highway 309N, Byhalia, MS 38611.
