Roy Preston Shands, 82, of Olive Branch, Mississippi, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born on July 23, 1943, in Ripley, Tennessee, Roy was the son of Norman Arthur and Eula Alma Shands and one of eleven children.
Roy proudly served his country in the United States Army before beginning a 30-year career as a lead supervisor with DuPont. A man of steady character and quiet strength, Roy lived his life guided by faith, devotion, and humility. He was a longtime member of Colonial Baptist Church in Memphis, TN and most recently Desoto Hills Baptist Church in Southaven, MS where he cherished the fellowship and friendships formed over the years.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Linda Kay Haire Shands; two sons, Joseph (Elizabeth) Shands of Greer, South Carolina, and Jeffery (Sarah) Shands of Olive Branch, Mississippi; and five grandchildren who were the light of his life — Preston, Emily, Cates, Callie, and William. He also leaves behind three siblings, Era Yevonne Dowell, Riley (Barbara) Shands, and James (Nancy) Shands as well as many nieces and nephews.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Ruth, Wallace, Myrtle, David, Ira, Dewey, and Louis.
Roy had a special way of connecting with others. Though often quiet and thoughtful, when he began to share stories, everyone listened. He loved teaching his grandchildren how to golf and fish and spent countless happy hours on the golf course, hunting, or at the bowling alley. Roy also enjoyed playing guitar and singing with family and friends, filling their gatherings with music and laughter. His famous apple dumplings and banana pudding were a treasured favorite among all who knew him.
