Born on July 7, 1960, in Las Animas, Colorado, Leenie was the sixth of seven children born to Antonio C. and Mary Marcella Lopez. She moved to Omaha at six years old, and has remained her home since. She grew up in South Omaha as a mischievous girl who graduated from Omaha Central in 1978 as “The Life of the Party.”
Leenie was a dedicated and loyal professional for Mutual of Omaha for 25 years, before her retirement in 2025. Her deep capacity for love and devotion was beautifully reflected in her personal life as well, as she lived with, and lovingly cared for, her mother until her mother's passing.
Those who knew Leenie knew she loved the simple pleasures of life. Whether she was aiming for a strike at the bowling alley, hitting the bullseye in a game of darts, rooting for the Denver Broncos and Colorado Buffalos, or sharing a laugh with family and friends over a nice cold Bud Light, her presence brightened every room. She brought that same energy and heart to her community as a proud member and passionate volunteer at the SOVACC GI Forum, where she was always ready to do whatever was needed to make their efforts a success.
Above all, family and friends were the true center of Leenie’s world. Her absolute joy was her massive, beautiful family. She is survived by her five devoted brothers and sisters: Anita C. Torres, Albert C. Lopez, Arthur C. Lopez, Amy C. Lopez (Dave Coufal), and Alisa C. Vanderpool (Cliff). She was preceded in death by her older brother Tony Lopez Jr. (Karen) and her parents Antonio Sr and Mary.
She also leaves behind an incredible legacy as a beloved Aunt to twenty-three nieces and nephews, over forty great-nieces and nephews, and a wonderfully growing circle of great-great-nieces and nephews.
Leenie’s generous heart, helpful hands and joyful spirit will be profoundly missed and forever cherished by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
