Barbara was born on September 9, 1941 in Omaha, NE to the late Nancy and Nick Colanino.
She is survived by several family members including her husband, Carmelo (Carl) Amato; children Stephen (Danyelle) Amato and Stacey (Blaine) Lazio; siblings Camille Johns, Butch Colanino, Fred Colanino, Nanette (Larry) Parker, Nick (Jan) Colanino, and Kathy Tyler; grandchildren Kaylee and Kristina Amato, Hannah and Taylor Lazio; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Preceded in death by Carma Jean Colanino and Paul (Oogie) Johns.
Barbara attended Omaha South High School and was seen through the eyes of many of her classmates as a "sweet gal with a big personality". Barbara took several courses in short hand in her high school years and would go on to work at Mutual of Omaha, the River City Round Up, and then finally as a salesperson selling fragrance at Dillards, Younkers, and Von Maur.
A loving sister, wife, mother, and grandmother...Barbara always put family first. Cooking was her specialty and she very much enjoyed when a meal could bring family members together, all while sharing memories and stories. You knew that if Barbara was cooking you would never go hungry and would usually be sent home with leftovers of her delicious mostaccioli and meatballs, "scachoonie", pizza, etc. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. A loving and devoted mother, Barbara would do anything for her children at a drop of a hat. For her grandchildren, she was the "fun grandma". Any time spent at Grandma and Grandpa's house was sure to be enjoyable and exciting, no matter the activity.
She also had a passion for all things flowers, and had great pride in the oasis she created surrounding her home, especially her backyard. Summer months were filled with tending to her flowers and creating a beautiful space that she, Carl, family, and friends could enjoy.
Barbara was the kind of family member and friend that always made herself available to lend a listening ear to anyone that was going through a tough spot, celebrating a time of joy, or trying to troubleshoot a situation. Her personality was one that was honest, supportive, and lively. Her infectious laugh made it impossible for you to hear and not smile and laugh yourself.
A memorial visitation for Barbara will be held Friday, February 23, 2024 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at Westlawn-Hillcrest Funeral Home, 5701 Center St, Omaha, Nebraska 68106, followed by a memorial service at 10:30 AM.
