

Dorothy was born in Bristol Township, Greene County Iowa. She went to Lothrop, Miller Park and North High School in which she played volleyball, softball and ran track. While in the 4th grade she won $5 in a "World Herald Flag Etiquette" contest. She was a girl scout and went on to become a Girl Scout Leader. She attended Boyles Business College. She worked several years at both the Woodman of the World Insurance Company and Douglas County Treasurers Office and she worked one day at Woolworth Dime Store. She had two sisters, Erma and Nadine, and one brother Joseph. She married Irvin on Valentine's Day in 1941 and they had one son, Dale Scot, who died in an auto accident at age 18. Dorothy was on a bowling team, was Past President of VFW, Charter member of Presbyterian Church of the Cross and their representative to the Church Women United of Omaha. She also was a charter member of the Marine Corps League Auxiliary and at one time got special recognition for being their longest active member in the whole country. She did volunteer work at the Vets Hospital, Omaha Food Bank, and Fontenelle Forest. She dressed dolls for over 20 years for the Marines Toys for Tots. She also rolled bandages for the Red Cross during WW2. She was an avid bird watcher and always kept the bird feeder full. Dorothy contributed her long life to never taking medication and watching Nebraska Husker football, K.C. Royals baseball and Chiefs football.
Preceded in death by parents, Joseph and Celia Downing; brother, Joseph Downing; sisters, Erma Olsen and Nadine Henderson; husband, Irvin A.; and son, Dale Scot. Survived by nieces, Geraldine (Bob) Thurber and Susan (Andy) Mason; nephew, Michael (Laurie) Downing; and many great and great great nieces and nephews.
