Edwin William Knuth

Edwin William Knuth was the fourth of nine children born to Claus and Adelheid (Kiihne) Knuth. He was born near Royal NE in Antelope County. The family were members of Zion Lutheran Church in Creighton NE, where he was baptized, attended Church, Sunday School and confirmed.
He grew up on the farm and rode a pony to a one room country school, grades one through eight. He attended high school in Orchard NE, while living with and helping his Uncle Ferd on the farm.
Ed was inducted into the Army on September 2nd, 1944 and served in the infantry. He served in the European Theater of Operations in World War II. Receiving a ribbon with two Bronze Battle Stars, two overseas service bars, Good conduct Medal, and a Bronze Star medal. He was honorably discharged with a rank of Sergeant in July of 1946. He served in the Army reserves until 1949. During the early winter of 1947, he met Velma (Ekman) at the Crosstown roller rink. They became engaged and married September 26th, 1948, settling in Omaha. Their marriage produced two daughters, Sandra Susan and Gloria Jean.
Ed worked for Kellogg's Cereal Company for a short time and then at Swift's packing plant for 12 years. His Swift's job was automated and he was re-hired at Kellogg's where he worked from 1960 until retiring in 1988.
Ed and Velma were active members of Grace Lutheran Church in their early marriage. They were charter members of Pilgrim Lutheran Church until Pilgrim merged with Bethel Lutheran Church in 1971.
Ed and Velma enjoyed square and round dancing for many years, traveling across the country to attend conventions and workshops.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Velma, and daughter Sandra. Four brothers and three sisters. Ed is survived by sister Alice and brother-in-law Ed. Daughter Gloria (Tom). Grandchildren: Nicole (Michael), Jennifer, Erin (Gavin), Corey, Chad (Vicki) and Lauren. Great-grandchildren: Isobel, Ivan, Benjamin, Harrison, Connor, Landyn, Colton and Jase. Many nieces, nephews and friends.
