I was just reading some old Facebook posts and saw Barb Duer had shared this terrible news with Joanie Wheeler. 
My husband Dave passed away unexpectedly on May 4, 2010 so I may have heard about your son on the news but didn't put it all together.
I will never forget Glen's care when Heather was born March 15, 1983.
Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. We lost a nephew in a car accident in 2003 so have an understanding of the loss you are feeling.
May your faith sustain you throughout this journey.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.

That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is over.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Our thoughts are with you. I am so glad I have gotten to know Gabe over the past few years at Mt Calvary, he was an extrordinary young man and was a mentor to my son Michael. We love you both and will be continuing to pray for you.

I was a classmate of Gabe's. He really was an extraordinary person. It was a blessing to know him. In his short time here on earth, he's done more to change the world than most can imagine doing in a lifetime. Now he awaits our arrival in heaven.

Dear Ruth and Glen, 
I never met Gabe but I feel like I knew him a little through my "sister" Eunice and my brother Rob. 

I loved hearing about the times he spent with them and the fun things they did together. I came to know of him as a bright, inquisitive, kind, polite and adventuresome young man who was greatly looking forward to his future. 

It's clear that you two did a great job of supporting him in his ambition to get out, see the world and experience new things. I imagine it wasn't always easy to let him "fly", but you loved him enough to set him free. 

His life was too short. Thanks to you he lived it fully. Gabe probably saw and did more things than most people his age and it's clear he loved every minute of it. 

As a mom I weep for you. It's small comfort but Gabe was truly lucky to have you as his mom and dad.

I am so sorry for your profound loss.  Glen was the proudest father I had ever met-Gabe was born around the time I was hospitalized on 4 West. Glen was my nurse both times I was there and I will never forget how many Gabe stories I got to hear. I remember thinking what a lucky child, to be so loved and adored. You two are in our prayers.

You have been in my prayers unceasingly since I heard the news about Gabe.  My heart aches for you.

Through the years I have come to see my child's baptism is as much a gift to me as it is to my son.  I find so much comfort in the sure and confident hope that I know that my sons are in God's hands -- and that is where they will remain forever.  Hold onto that hope.  Don't let go of it.  You know that Gabe is safely resting in God's hands and there he will remain forever.  I can only imagine how thrilled Gabe is to be with the Creator of the creation that he loved so much.

Blessings and comfort to you, dear family.  Your Christian brothers & sisters are alongside you in prayer, although we've never met.  I was at campsite 41 Wednesday and saw the memorial cross with verse and "Gabe."  I was unaware that this had happened, but I noticed that the flowers laid there with loving care were fresh, and then saw the date was just the day before.   I looked up online to see the situation.  I wanted you to know that your loving memorial was an obvious witness that this was a child of God, and it touched me, a stranger, so I believe it was a witness to others who may see it.  May God comfort you all.  Just a fellow traveler.

Gabe was honestly the most loving and caring person I know! He brought joy to everyone's life no matter the circumstance. When there was a problem he would scale the wall that stood in his way! He never gave up! His love for God and the Lord's creation showed tremendously. Gabe was an oustanding individual and shone God's light so bright that even with one's eyes closed you could tell something was different about him; he put God first! Gabe you were so special. You just made school better. I'm not sure what we would've done with out your smiling face. Your hilarious comments and antics in research methods always brightened up my day. You made me see Gods creation in a new way. I remember your presentation on mountain top mining and how it is bad for the environment. You had passion when you spoke about how it was hurting people and the environment. You had such a good heart. I know that your influence will never die. Your just amazing and I'll never forget you.

Glen & Ruth, I had the honor of being with Gabe and his friends Monday night. It was so heartwarming to see them all around the campfire, laughing and joking. Talking about sunday and graduation and plans for the future, but mostly it was easy to hear the love and respect these young men and women had for each other. Gabe told me "it's good for me to be here Mr. Carlson" and I now I imagine him saying those same words in heaven, it's good for me to be here. I was blessed to know Gabe, I thank you and God for sharing him with our Concordia family, we all grieve with you that Gabe has left us, but he left us with hope and the assurance that he is indeed with Jesus now, and that is my comfort and I hope yours. Be blessed and be loved by those around you.

One of our daughters attended Concordia with Gabe while the other daughter was looking forward to welcoming Gabe into the Cadre Academy.  I am with Christ For the City International where Gabe had gone on the Urban Plunge serving inner city folks of Omaha.  I am discovering the many ways that Gabe has loved the Lord as photos of him emerge through emails and blogs.  It is evident to me that Gabe was a young man whose life was spent seeking first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. He loved God by loving others as he served on the Urban Plunge weekend.  He loved God by seeking His face in prayer at the 168 city prayer event in March.  He loved God by studying His word by
reading through the "bible in a year".  Thank you for raising such a wonderful godly young man whom I barely knew but leaves behind an indelible mark on my life.  I pray the Father of all comfort be with you both during this time of great loss.

Although I didn't know you very well I know you will be greatly missed and that you have amazing faith! And although I know that it should be a great comfort to all who knew you that you are right where you want to be it still breaks my heart as I am sure it does many other people. So although I don't know why I tell myself that God had something special he needed you for and ultimatly we have to trust him. But I also know you will forever be missed by many people and you were very much loved and always will be!

I can't imagine the loss of a son and a brother. I know it must be hard, but I want you to know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Remember God will never give you more then you can handle and that in these times HE is holding you and watching Gabe garden some GOREGOUS flowers in Heaven.

There are few people at Gabe's age who followed God with such humility and bravery, yet Gabe stood out as a man who represented God's love and kindness throughout his everyday actions. I don't think I ever saw Gabe frown once while I was in class with him he was always more of a smiler, and I know when we see him again he will be wearing his big heartwarming smile.

Nothing compares to the pain of the loss of the child- May the Lord be with you during this time of pain.

Gabe. There is nothing can describe my feeling right now. I remember jus last monday u gave me a ride to school and we had such a great time that night. I came back home and then everything changed. I still cannot believe that fact that my dear friend is not here anymore.
Gabe, thank you for everything you do for everybody... You have such a great heart and love for every person you know. Your life is beautiful, and so is your soul. I wish I can see you one more time, but the time and distance are preventing it. But Gabe I'm sure one day, I will meet you in heaven, in the garden. I will see you in day light, with the green sunglasses and green shirt you often wear. At that moment I will sure tell you how much I love you and miss you.

Gabe, you are always in my heart. Even the sadness breaks my heart to a million pieces, but I will love you and miss you by every piece.

Your family is in my prayer always. You told me that God had great plan for me, I'm sure that God has plan for your family and every person who knows you too.

Glen, Ruth & family....I do not know you personally (my niece is Sue Hulke) but I share the pain you feel in Gabe's passing from this temporary earthly home to his heavenly home. Our daughter went home to Jesus in Sept. of 2002--she was 26 & left us a 2 1/2 yr old little girl to raise.  My heart always hurts for those who have to travel the same path but God is good and He will sustain you in all your sorrows. My prayers and sympathies are for & with you & your family.
