Helen Martha Twedt passed away peacefully on January 14th, 2024. She was born in Comstock, Nebraska, to Martha (Foral) and Joseph Baburek. When the family moved to South Omaha before World War II, Helen began her lifelong love for the city of Omaha. After graduating from South High School, she went directly to work, becoming a part of the secretarial pool at Swift and Company. Every weekend, she would get dressed up to go dancing at Sokol Hall or Peony Park. She loved going out with the girls and freely admitted she used to spend “entirely too much money” on clothing and jewelry. She simply loved looking beautiful on the dance floor.
When she married Allan Twedt in the summer of 1967, Helen switched all of her attention to her family. Her dance floor became the halls of her home. She became “the driver” to all events, and her music became the laughter of children from the back seat of the car on the way to the movie or a football game. After raising her children in Omaha and West Point, Nebraska, she found that her own mother needed in-home care. Helen and Allan moved back to Omaha, taking care of her mother for the next 20 years while also working at Omaha Steaks. When her husband could no longer care for himself, she dedicated herself to his care, as well. Helen lived a life of service to others. Her greatest joys came from a walk through the Henry Doorly Zoo or Lauritzen Gardens; a bouquet of flowers on her table filled her heart for days. She appreciated the small things, and she loved to give one piece of advice: Just live one day at a time.
Helen’s favorite thing to talk about was her ability to still get out on the road and drive “at her age.” She loved the freedom of just getting in the car and driving around the city she loved so much. She would meander through the streets of South Omaha on a nice day with her window down. She’d pass the Bohemian Café, Sokol Hall, and her childhood homes off of Martha and Vinton Streets. I am certain the music and laughter of her past were nearly palpable for her even 60 years later.
Helen was the bride to Allan Twedt for over 55 years. She is survived by her daughters Tara Twedt (Husband-Richard Duke), Andrea Stumpf (husband-Shane), and son, Thor Twedt, and her six beautiful grandchildren Ian, Carina, Carter, Hannah, Bridget, and Serena. Helen was preceded in death by her brother Ted Baburek, and her parents, Joseph and Martha Baburek. Helen leaves behind many caring friends and family who experienced her genuine love.
A Visitation for Helen will be held Monday, January 22, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Westlawn-Hillcrest Funeral Home, 5701 Center Street, Omaha, Nebraska 68106, followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 AM and Interment in Westlawn-Hillcrest Memorial Park.
