Julia Carmen Sablan Calvo

Julia Carmen Sablan Calvo, 69, passed away on September 11, 2026. She was a beloved daughter, sister, auntie, godmother, friend, and faithful servant of Christ. Julie will be remembered for her generous heart, quick wit, love of laughter, and the many ways she shared her time and talents with the people and community she loved.

Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Julie grew up in a military family and experienced a childhood filled with new places, people, and adventures. Her family lived in Hawaii, Kansas, Texas, Guam, the Philippines, and North Dakota before settling in Nebraska when she was 13, after her father retired from the military. These early experiences helped shape her love of travel, her appreciation for different people and places, and her curiosity about the world around her.

Julie graduated from Daniel J. Gross High School in 1976 and went on to attend St. Scholastica College in Duluth, Minnesota. She began her professional career at Kellogg's in Omaha before moving into communications and technology roles with U S West in Omaha and Denver. She eventually returned to Omaha where she began the next chapter of her career with Mutual of Omaha. Julie dedicated 25 years of service to the company before retiring. While Julie took great pride in her career; family, faith, and relationships with others were at the heart of her life. She was a faithful member of St. Peter Catholic Church for many years and gave generously of herself through Catholic education and service. She was involved with CCD and RCIA and served with the St. Vincent de Paul Society, always willing to share her time and compassion with others.

Julie also had a wonderful sense of adventure. She loved to travel with family and friends and was always ready for the next experience. In the fall of 2025, she accomplished one of her bucket-list dreams when she visited the last 5 of all 50 states—a fitting accomplishment for someone who had spent her life discovering new places and embracing new experiences.

Julie had a sharp sense of humor and a quick wit and never seemed to take herself too seriously. She loved a good trivia event, a competitive game of Scrabble, and mahjong. Whether gathered around a game, traveling, or simply sharing time with family and friends, Julie brought laughter and warmth to every occasion.

Julie was preceded in death by her parents, Jesus and Leonila Calvo. She is survived by her siblings, Peter Calvo, Patricia McGuire, James Calvo, Marie Eledge (James), and Lourdes Gibson (Jason), and her nieces and nephews, Mindy Calvo, Saxon Calvo, Ashley McGuire (James Carrig), Brittani Tanhueco (Jerome), Kourtney Keller (Christopher), Sam Eledge, Caleb Gibson, Noah Gibson (Anna), and James Calvo Jr, as well as several great-nieces and great -nephews.

Julie leaves behind a family and circle of friends who were deeply blessed by her presence in their lives. Her faith, generosity, humor, and love created memories that will be treasured for years to come.

A visitation will be held on Friday, September 18 from 4-8 p.m. wth a rosary at 7 p.m. at Westlawn-Hillcrest Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, September 19 at 1 p.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church. The family will be holding a private inurnment at a later date.
