Lucy grew up and went to school in Marion, IA. In 1945 she entered into nurses’ training at St. Lukes in Cedar Rapids as part of the Nurse Corps, completing the diploma program in 1948 before going on to study operating room procedures at Michael Reese Hospital, Chicago, IL. From there, she went to her first job in Amarillo, TX. In 1954, she married Hiram (Hi) Wood in Amarillo & they celebrated 50 years of married life just before Hi’s death in 2004.
Hi’s job required frequent moves, and Lucy had jobs in Tulsa (where she also earned a BS in Nursing at Tulsa University); Williamson, WV; Atlanta, GA; Dallas, TX; Los Angeles, CA (where she earned an MS in Nursing Administration from UCLA); Coos Bay, OR; and Omaha, NE. In Omaha, she initially worked for Catholic Health, but later was the Director of Nursing at Immanuel Nursing Home. She retired formally in 1991, but went on to develop a Wellness Program at First United Methodist Church in Omaha, from which she retired in 1995.
Lucy loved learning, reading, traveling, and lively discussions. The learning, reading and discussions were often centered around her strong faith.
Lucy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother Floyd Domer, and her son Colin Odom. She is survived by her sister-in-law Judy Domer of Asheville, NC, her cousin Jalaa McNeal of Cedar Rapids, her daughter Caryn Martin of Oklahoma City, and grandchildren John Martin and wife Lyndsey, Grant Odom, Tony Odom, Mikaelie Odom, and Taryn Odom, and great-grandsons Cameron and Alex Martin.
