Michael Edward Bittner, known to most as Mike, was born September 23, 1957, in Omaha, Nebraska and grew up in Carter Lake, Iowa. He moved to Omaha in 1990 and lived there until he passed on June 12, 2026, at 68 years old.
Mike worked for the Ironworkers Local 21 in Omaha, following his father into that trade. The years he spent as an ironworker were some of the best. He felt pride being among the men known for building the structural bones of Omaha.
He was a man of specific pleasures…a warm cup of coffee in the morning, a 65° day with the windows open, the perfect sandwich to chip ratio, a structured routine, and a thought-provoking book, show, or game. He followed Nebraska football with the devotion of any true Husker fan, and we’re all hoping they’ll pull a winning season this year in his honor.
Mike was most himself with his family. He didn’t reach far or wide, but the people he loved, he loved fully…even when he didn’t always know how to show it.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Inamae Frances Bittner (née Hankins); his father, Oval Edward Bittner; and his brother, James Herbert Bittner.
He is survived by his children, Jacob Michael Bittner, Jessica Rene Bittner, and Michaela Mae Bittner-Tighe; seven grandchildren (in order of birth), Samuel Glen Tighe, Colin Dean Tighe, Beatrix Jane Bittner, Winnefred Maebe Bittner, Addison Lynn Bittner, Myra Mae Tighe, and Effie Ruth Tighe; and his sisters, Kathleen Ellen Bittner and Cherrie Louise Hug (née Bittner).
