Barbara Means, resident of Oneonta, formerly of Otego, passed away on January 13 in her home surrounded by loved ones. She was predeceased by her husband, Chalmers, of 61 years and is survived by her 4 children, 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Born on July 23, 1931 in Gettysburg, PA where she grew up playing on the battlefields, Barbara loved to read and swim. She received her first degree at Cedar Crest College and went on to earn two masters degrees in Special Education and Library Science.
Barbara was always in pursuit of learning and embodied the true spirit of a lifelong student. She was a world traveler, an early feminist, and a talented artist, mastering multiple mediums from fiber arts to watercolors and collage. Always prioritizing the outdoors and her community, she was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, a beloved participant of the local ADK chapter, and a fierce bridge competitor.
In the last months of her life, her family lovingly remarked upon how Barbara said yes to everything with gratitude and joy. This is also how she lived—saying yes to learning, yes to love, yes to life.
Her celebration of life ceremony will be held on Friday, January 18th at 3pm at First Presbyterian Church of Oneonta. In honor of Barbara’s insatiable love for books and learning, donations may be made to Huntington Memorial Library in her memory.
