Bernice Ruth Bright Butts

She was born on a dairy farm in South Kortright on October 9, 1922, the eldest daughter of Clark and Maude Bright. Residing in Oneonta for over 60 years of her life, she was married to H. Laurence Butts of Masonville in 1948. “Larry” went home to be with the Lord in 2003.

For many years Bernice worked at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta as the supervisor of the snack shop, and then later, of the cafeteria. Bernice was a member of the Susquehanna Valley Baptist Church of Oneonta and attended The Gathering Place of Binghamton since living in Johnson City.

She is survived by her two children, Ellen Halsey of Oneonta, and Nancy Marlett of Johnson City; four grandchildren, Sean Halsey of Oneonta, Ryan Halsey of Athens, Georgia, Sarah Moore of Kent, Ohio, and Daniel Marlett of Akron, Ohio.

A funeral service will be held at 11am on Saturday, August 9, 2014 at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street, Oneonta, with the Rev. Keith Marlett and Pastor Matt Carlton officiating. Interment will follow the service at the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends and family may call at the funeral home from 10am to 11am, at which time the family will be receiving guests.
