Betty Jane Harder, 91, of Oneonta, passed away June 17, 2018 at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital. She was born in Syracuse, New York, on December 19, 1926. In 1947, Betty married Robert J. Harder and in the early 1950’s moved to Oneonta with their two sons.
Betty was foremost, a caring and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She prepared the most wonderful meals and was responsible for an impeccably well-maintained home. As an animal lover, Betty always enjoyed the company of one or two feline friends; and early in her life, she rode and cared for horses in her hometown, Syracuse.
Betty’s musical abilities were highlighted most through singing with the City of the Hills Sweet Adeline Chorus and several quartets including, “Fancy That” and “Caprice”. As a founding member of the chorus, Betty assisted in many capacities, and very much valued the hours of rehearsal and friendships developed.
As a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Oneonta, Betty sang in the choir and helped on various church committees. Other interests included; the Woodhaven Women’s Golf league, afternoons playing bridge with her friends, and several years traveling and camping with her family.
Betty was predeceased by her husband, Robert J., October 2015. She is survived by her two sons, Robert (Cheryl), Oneonta, NY and David (Geri), of West Oneonta, five grandchildren: Craig (Julia), of West Seneca, NY, Brian of Yacolt, Washington, Lauren of Manlius, NY, Brendan (Kylie) Port Crane, NY and Rebecca, Castle Rock, Colorado, two great grandchildren: Tyler Harder, Nashville Tennessee and Grant Harder, Nolensville, Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews in the Syracuse area.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday June 21, from 5-7 PM at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand Street, Oneonta, with the family in attendance.
A Committal Service will be held Friday, June 22 for the immediate family, at the Glenwood Cemetery, in Oneonta. The Rev. Mark Montfort, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, will preside.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Oneonta, or the local ASPCA, Cooperstown.
