together they raised three children, John, (Patricia) Schluep, Elizabeth, (David) Beisler both of Oneonta and Mark Schluep of Watertown.
John and Betty spent many years living and working in Central New York, he as a math teacher for the Cato-Meridian school district and then as a math professor at SUNY Oswego while Betty focused on raising their children. Betty always made community service a priority working to establish the Oswego County Mental Health Association and served as the first director of social services at the Oswego Hospital.
In 1980 the Schluep’s moved to Otsego county to be closer to family. As a couple they were active with the Doubleday Dancers and Habitat for Humanity. They both enjoyed participating in CCAL courses and trips. Along with their many hobbies, Betty established a ride service for cancer patients throughout Otsego county to make it to their treatments, for this she received the citizen of the year award.
In addition to her children, Betty is survived by 6 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, her brother and sister-in-law Ted and Karin Barlow of Winsted Connecticut, and many nieces and nephews whom she adored. She was predeceased by her husband John and her sisters and their husbands, William and Margaret Sluiter and Paul and Dorothy Brown.
A loving and kind person, Betty leaves a legacy that includes passions for sewing, gardening, life-long learning and caring for her community.
Her family would like to thank the staff of the Chestnut Park Rehab and Nursing Facility for their devoted and loving care of their mother.
In accordance with Betty’s wishes, the family will hold a celebration of her life at their convenience, in a garden, on a “big sky day.” Donations in Betty’s honor may be made to the charity of your choice.
