Daria N. Cleveland
May 21, 1928 – December 24, 2019
Daria N. Cleveland, 91, of Mt. Vision, went to be with the Lord on December 24th after a courageous 6 year battle following the effects of a stroke.
She was born Daria Elsa Irmgard Nitsche in Leipzig, Germany in May 1928. She was affectionately known as Omi to her family and beloved grandchildren.
Daria met her husband and lifelong love, Wilber Cleveland, while he was serving in the Army in Germany. She immigrated to the United States and they were married in November 1958. Together they operated the family farm in Mt. Vision, where Daria loved the surrounding countryside. She took great pride in furnishing the house, gardening, cooking and baking, was an accomplished seamstress and knitter and introduced many people to German food and traditions.
She was a long time member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Laurens and was a past member of the church council and council president. Her unfailing faith was evident in all she did in life. For years she read the Reformation Sunday scriptures in German while the Pastor translated into English for the congregation.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Wilber H. Cleveland, son Carlton (Michelle) of Oneonta and twin daughters, Daria Debra (Mark) of Osseo, Minnesota and Sarah Lee (Gary) of Marcellus, NY and her grandchildren Liam Ritchie, Karina Erikson and Catherine and Megan Cleveland.
To honor Daria’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral.
Memorial Donations can be made to the St. Matthews Lutheran Church at 125 Main Street, Laurens, NY 13796.
