Deborah M. Hubbs

February 17, 1953October 26, 2020

Deborah Mary Hubbs passed away October 26, 2020 after a courageous battle with cancer. Her loving family was at her side at home as she requested.

Deb was born on February 17, 1953 in Walton NY. Her parents, both predeceased, were Robert and Lorna DuMond. Deb married Michael Hubbs on August 11, 1973 in Walton. They just celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary, but were best friends since seventh grade.

Deb is survived by her husband Mike, her son Damon, his wife Radka and their son Hudson, and her daughter Nicole Marie and her husband Nick Lombardo. Deb is also survived by her brother Dennis DuMond and his wife Ruth.

Deb was a stay at home mom until her youngest Nicole went to Valleyview School, where Deb then became a school aide. Deb later worked at Center Street school in the library. At that point in her life she started taking part time classes at SUNY Oneonta, and then later full time. She graduated in 1993 and became a ninth grade history teacher at Unatego Central School. Deb was a natural and imaginative teacher. She was passionate about her job and loved her students. Deb retired in 2010, and for the next five years traveled with Mike.

Deb was an avid reader, a talented knitter and played golf for over 20 years. Her love of family was central to her life. Deb was a true free spirit and always found the best in people, but she wouldn’t tolerate any kind of injustice and fought for many causes, including work for NYSUT throughout her teaching career.

My condolences. I loved having Mrs Hubbs as my ninth grade social studies teacher. I remember her making the material so engaging and interesting. She was part of my inspiration to become a Social Studies teacher and now as a ninth grade social studies teacher, I only hope that I am half as engaging as she was in Global history. I will miss her greatly.

Oh, how I adored my ninth-grade history class at Unatego with Mrs. Hubbs! Each lesson was creative and captivatingly executed by this wonderful educator. She truly was a natural. I have a specific memory of her, fingers pinched together, exclaiming in an emphasized Italian accent, "Machiavelli - The Prince!" in hopes of helping us remember the association while studying for an upcoming test. I guess it worked, because here I am still hearing it in her voice. She touched so many lives and will be remembered fondly!

To the Hubbs Family-My sincere condolences on the loss of Debbie. I had the honor of being a colleague of Debbie's at Unatego. I was the High School Secretary.
My son also had Debbie as a teacher and loved her. She was a wonderful teacher and person. She taught with enthusiasm and made her lessons interesting for her students. I am so sorry Debbie had to endure what she went through. She was such a brave and courageous woman. May she rest in peace. Judy Pitel

One of the great joys of my youth was being friends with Deborah DuMond Hubbs. Deb was clever, well read, witty, insightful and wickedly funny. Everyone she met was richer for knowing her.

Debbie and I had rooms next to each other at Unatego for twelve years and shared the ninth graders--her in Global Studies and me in English. Moreover, we shared twenty-eight years of a warm friendship filled with hours of discussion of family, travel, politics, literature, and so much more; fun golf outings with Ellen and Pru; long lunches at the Yellow Deli; and an appreciation of the joys of retirement. I will always treasure our friendship. Mike, I wish you and the family comfort in your memories of Debbie, and solace in the good and brave life she led.

Deborah and I taught together at Unatego. She was a talented, energetic teacher and a dear colleague. She also brought so much laughter and joy to our "lunch group." My deepest condolences to her family!
