Dorothy was born on September 9, 1922 in Middletown, Connecticut, the daughter of the late Worthington and Dorothy (Sayward) Kennedy. She married Alton M. Benedict on March 2, 1946. He predeceased her on December 10, 2002.
Dorothy was a library clerk for the Delaware Academy in Delhi. After retirement from the school, she went on to work for the Delaware County Board of Elections as Deputy Commissioner. She retired from that position in 1987.
In her earlier years, she was involved with the 4-H program and participated in many of her children’s activities. Dorothy loved to read and travel to such places as Alaska, Switzerland and California. She was a member of the Treadwell Methodist church.
Dorothy is survived by her children and their spouses, Kathy Decker of Oneonta, Elaine and Bruce Walcott of Saratoga Springs, James and Mary Benedict of Walnut Creek, California, and Bruce and Sharon Benedict of Latham; her grandchildren, Gordy Tyler, Jr., Christopher Tyler, Barbara (David) Kenyon, Michael (Sherrie) Walcott, Randall Benedict, Christopher (Amber) Benedict, Kristi (Martin) Egerth, and Kurt Benedict.
She is also survived by her great grandchildren, Jeff and Steven Tyler, Carleigh Kenyon, Bree Walcott, Jesse and Taylor Benedict, Mason and Colton Benedict; her sister, Marjorie (Roger) Cole of Oneonta and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, Worthington and Dorothy Kennedy; her husband, Alton; her brothers, Donald S. and William S. Kennedy
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at 11:00 AM in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand Street, Oneonta, with the Rev. Bert More officiating. Burial will follow in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.
