Dorothy was born in Boise, Idaho on June 2, 1924, to Dorothy Lincoln and Harry Hawley. She was raised in her beloved Minneapolis, Minnesota spending summers getting sunburned at the Lake of the Isles and having lunch with her girlfriends downtown at Dayton’s. She met her soul mate Harry in 1947 at the University of Minnesota and, after only three months they eloped and embarked on a life of childrearing, fiction writing, good friends and travel.
During her long life Dorothy had several deep and abiding passions; her large family, her many friends, gardening, playing bridge, cooking and eating good food, writing, the Democratic Party and the community of Oneonta. Dorothy was a founding member of UCCCA, and the local chapters of Planned Parenthood and Head Start. She was also a long time member of the League of Women Voters and The Oneonta Federated Garden Club.
Throughout her long life and up to the end she continued to grow and learn, traveling to Washington state by train at the age of 85, to a women’s writers workshop; writing a blog (http://folderolderol.wordpress.com" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">folderolderol.wordpress.com
Dorothy was an adventurer with an endless enthusiasm for new experiences, friends and ideas. She was an avid reader of history and committed to taking classes through the Center for Continuing Adult Learning in everything from Shakespeare to Jazz History. She loved young people and made her home a haven for them, especially during the turbulent 1960s and ‘70s. Among her other accomplishments,
Dorothy wrote and self published a history of her American ancestors, wrote a cookbook dedicated to healthful cooking and graduated as a Master Gardener from Cornell Cooperative Extension.
Dorothy was an inspiration to all, living vibrantly with high spirits and hope to the end. Her humor and imagination are reflected in one of her favorite lines by Emily Dickinson, “Tell all the truth, but tell it slant.”
She is survived by her five loving children including David, his wife Julie and their children Thalia and Harry, Charles and his ex-wife Ofra and their son Maayan, Priscilla and her husband Billy and their children Ben, Susanna, Andrew and Emily, Nancy and her children Gabriel and Alexa and Alexa's husband Justin, and Betsy and her husband Jim and their children Jack and Fiona.
