Edwin C. Wilmarth, 95 years old, of Deposit, NY, passed away on Friday, June 27th. Ed was born in Endicott, NY, on September 15, 1929, the third of four sons to Carl and Mildred Wilmarth. He attended elementary school in Jackson, PA, and high school at Blue Ridge High School in New Milford, PA. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950-1953, working as an instructor on the remote-control turret systems of the B-29 airplane. It was while he was at the Peterson Air Force Base, in Colorado, that Ed learned to ski and developed a lifelong passion for skiing. After his service, Ed worked with his uncle and cousins in construction and later became a manager at Wilmarth and Gulino Building Supplies in Kirkwood, NY. He married the love of his life, Almeda “Al”, in 1962 and started college at SUNY Oswego, where he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. He was a professor of Construction Technology at SUNY Delhi for 26 years. After retirement, he and Al moved to Oquaga Lake and later spent winters in West Palm Beach, FL.
During his lifetime, he enjoyed helping with construction projects for family and friends, deer hunting, fishing, downhill skiing with Al, traveling the world, and ski patrolling at Bobcat Mountain. He and Al also loved ballroom dancing at Scott’s Resort at Oquaga Lake and Let’s Dance Club in Binghamton.
Ed was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Almeda, as well as his mother and father, and his three brothers, Harold, Paul, and Howard.
He is survived by his son, Kurt, and fiancée Stacey and her son Gage of Rochester, NY, and his daughter, Amy, of Strafford, VT, as well as his grandchildren Luca and Sophie.
Ed will be remembered for his warm smile and kind, generous spirit. He was proud of his many volunteer posts as a ski patroller, an EMT with the Delhi ambulance squad, with the Oquaga Lake Improvement Association, and on many construction projects for family and friends. A celebration of life is being planned for later this summer at Oquaga Lake.
