
Henry was born on September 11, 1921 in Oneonta, the son of the late William B. and Ella (Bull) Hastie.
He attended Bugbee Elementary School, and then Oneonta High School, where he was a charter member of the high school’s chemistry club. Henry was also a member of the German and mathematics clubs. Henry graduated from Oneonta High School in 1939 and then took his freshman year at Hartwick College before transferring to Cornell University, where he earned an Artium Baccalaureatus Degree in 1943.
Henry went to work for Norwich Pharmaceuticals for around 7 years, where he was an Organic Research Chemist. On June 3, 1952, Henry was granted a patent for a discovery he made during his research.
After leaving Norwich, Henry went onto hold teaching positions at several colleges and universities across the country including a return to Hartwick College, where he was a Chemistry Lab Assistant from 1952-54; an Acting Instructor of Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee from 1959-1960; a Professor of Chemistry at Benedict College in Columbia, SC from 1960-62; and a Biochemistry Instructor at the Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine from 1970-72. His biography has been published in both “Leaders of American Science” and “Who’s Who in American Education”.
Henry was a senior member of the American Chemical Society and a former member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is also a former member of the American Association of University Professors. Henry was also a published poet and a member of the International Society of Poets. He was granted the Golden Poet Award at the World of Poetry in Sacramento, CA.
A funeral service for Henry will be held at 10am on Friday, October 24, 2014 at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street, Oneonta, with the Rev. Gary Bonebrake officiating. Interment will be in the West Oneonta Cemetery, following the service. Friends may visit the funeral home during the hour prior to the service to pay their respects to Henry.
