Mrs. Hildegard E. Barnes, a resident of the A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta, passed away there peacefully on Thursday December 13th, 2018. At the time of her passing she had the love and support of her daughters and son-in-law at her side.
Hildegard was born in Ludwigshafen, Germany on May 24th, 1933 the daughter of Eugen and Magareta (Fink) Mannuss.
Growing up in Germany and enduring the tragedies of World War II shaped the strong and determined woman that she became.
While employed as a civilian for the U.S. Air Force in Landstuhl/Ramstein, Germany, she met and married her husband Donald Barnes who was stationed there. Donald predeceased her in 2017. They were married almost 60 years.
In 1958 the couple and their two young daughters came to the United States. From city living to country living being a farmer’s wife she once again demonstrated her strength in adapting to a new way of life. Their third daughter was born in this country.
Besides raising her family, baking, cooking and being a farmer, she also held many jobs outside the home. The last being a waitress at the thruway restaurant, Indian Castle, Little Falls, NY.
Hilde enjoyed her family here and abroad. She traveled to Germany many times introducing her children and grandchildren to their German heritage. Hilde also went to Brazil to visit the family of the exchange student who spent a year with the family. She enjoyed also travelling and camping through out the United States, crossing the country numerous times.
Hildegard is survived by her daughters Roswitha (Walter) Miner, Evelyn Fiskaa (Peter) and Donna Roush, a sister Lisel (Weiner) Riedel, a brother Eugen (Veronika) Mannuss, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her parents, stepmother Elisabeth Mannuss, a sister Margot (Heinz) Obendorfer, son in law Gene Roush.
A celebration of live and funeral services will be held Saturday January 5th, 2019 at at the United Methodist Church in Treadwell, NY. Calling hours 10:00 AM-11:00 AM. Services immediately following. Burial will be at Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery, in Romulus, NY this coming spring.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care in her name, at 297 River Street Service Rd, Oneonta, NY 13820.
