He was born November 23, 1943 in Oneonta the son of the late Dale K. and Mary G. (Gallagher) Olmstead.
He graduated from Oneonta High School.
For 16 years he worked for Pleezing Grocery. Then from 1982-2009, Jim was a custodian at SUNY Oneonta. After his retirement from SUCO he worked as a custodian for Bugbee Children's Center.
Jim is survived by his wife, Barbara Olmstead, Oneonta; two daughters, Tracy Olmstead and her son, Gage Olmstead and Shelley Olmstead of Oneonta; one brother, Michael Olmstead; nieces and nephews, Tina Spisack, Tim Olmstead, Robert Olmstead Malisa Olmstead, Laurie Olmstead and Kyle Olmstead. He was predeceased by his son, James R. Olmstead; and three brothers, Gerard, Robert and Patrick Olmstead.
