Joan was born in Sidney, NY on February 18, 1939 to her parents, David C. Howland and Lottie Ada Howland (Finch). She was a long-term resident of the area. Joan spent her childhood in Oneonta, and later moved to Otego when she met her husband, Lynn Gillingham. Joan and Lynn were married on July 19, 1969 at the Methodist Church in Oneonta. They spent 51 glorious years together, and shared many children.
Joan worked as a bookkeeper for several years at Oneonta Tire and Auto before retiring to enjoy life’s gifts.
Anybody who knew Joan would tell you how great of an athlete she was. She played softball, paddled in canoe races, and participated in a bowling league for many years. She took pride in coaching her women’s softball team in the Oneonta recreational league until she was 80 years old. Joan’s favorite pastime was following all of the kids’ sporting events, whether it be her grandchildren’s games or her niece’s and nephew’s. Joan loved to gamble, so casino trips were a common getaway for her to enjoy with her family and friends. Joan had many hobbies, and these are just a few of her highlights.
She leaves behind her children: Sherry (Peter) Barberio, Sandra (Clint) Fiaschi, Vicki (Steve) Judd, Richard (Lori) Gillingham, Gordon Gillingham, Daniel Gillingham, and Connie (Joseph) King; grandchildren: Corey, Ryan, Lauryn, Caleb, Kaeli, Sam, Justin, Charlie, Shelly, and Mike, along with several step-grandchildren; and siblings: Harold (Linda) Howland, Jean Howland, Nancy (Edward) Miller, and Linda (Doug) Smith. She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren. Joan was blessed to be surrounded by a large loving family. Her grandchildren were her whole world and she took pride in their accomplishments. Joan was predeceased by her parents, David and Lottie Howland. Joan loved her family dearly, and was generous to many. She has touched the lives of several people, and will be greatly missed.
Joan has asked for contributions to be made to the Otego Fire Department or Helios Care, in her name, in lieu of flowers. Arrangements have been made at Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta, NY.
