Born on May 1, 1942, in Far Rockaway, NY, he was the son of John J. Sr. and Elsie T. (Sherman) McManus. He grew up in Valley Stream, NY.
John worked as a Police Mechanic for the Nassau County Police Department and proudly served as a volunteer firefighter with the Valley Stream Fire Department, Engine 1, badge #471. After retiring from NCPD, he moved to the home he built with the help of friends who became like family. He cherished that home and its mountain view. Above all, he was devoted to his family and deeply loved his children and grandchildren.
John enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and watching birds and wildlife. He had a lifelong love of animals, was an avid New York Yankees fan, and even spent time driving a race car in his younger years. John loved reminiscing about his past, laughing as he told each story. He always had a way of turning a simple memory into a great tale.
He is survived by his children, John McManus of New Jersey and Dawn McManus of New York; and his grandchildren, Hilary McManus, Chloe McManus, and Madelyn Breitstein.
He was predeceased by his parents and his two sisters, Margaret (Peggy) Lanzetta and Barbara Zickl.
