He was born on March 4, 1930 in Passaic, NJ, the son of John W. O. and Sarah (Majury) Thompson.
John was employed for many years at SUNY Oneonta, retiring as Associate Registrar. He was a long-time member of the Masons.
He enjoyed photography, camping, traveling, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his children, Glenn (Jane) Thompson, Sloatsburg, Jean (Dale) Downin, Franklin, Janet (Chip) Thomas, Sunderland, MA, Glenn (Heather) Hotaling; grandchildren, Kurt Thomas, Lauren (Rich Kastor) Thompson, Carley (Shawn Cliney) Thompson, Kelly (Matt) Coolbaugh, Megan Hotaling, Natalie (Nate Perry) Downin, Troy (Miranda Smith) Thompson, Haley Downin; great grandchildren, Charlotte Coolbaugh, Finley Perry; brother, Donald (Marilyn) Thompson, Belvidere, NJ; brother in law, Robert (Marge) Scarr; sister in law, Linda Thompson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years Nancy Thompson; daughter, Heather Hotaling; son Kenneth Thompson; his parents; and brother, Douglas Thompson.
Friends are invited to greet the family from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, July 27, at the First Presbyterian Church, 296 Main Street, Oneonta, where a funeral service will take place immediately following at 1 p.m.
Burial will take place in Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.
In lieu of flowers, donations are asked to be made to the Franklin Emergency Squad, 351 Main St., Franklin, NY 13775.
