
He was born on April 13, 1917 in New York City the son of Joseph A. and Frances (Potocnik) Mercun. He married Hilda Slivsek on November 21, 1940 in St. Joseph’s Church, Worcester, NY.
Joe served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was employed in the aircraft industry in Long Island and Johnsville, PA. He also managed a petroleum plant for Agway in Freehold, NJ; worked as a shipping clerk for Enterprise Aluminum Co. in Oneonta; and worked in food service for 15 years at State University College Oneonta, from which he retired in 1985. Following retirement, Joe worked for Volkswagen Audi of Oneonta for 10 years.
Joe was a member of St. Mary’s Church, and faithfully served as an usher for many years.
He was a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #1260, and served as President in 1961; the American Legion Post 259; and served as secretary of the Merccantile Bowling League for 19 years.
He enjoyed bowling, and was an ardent fan of the NY Yankees and the NY Giants. He loved to travel, and traveled throughout the USA, Mexico, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, as well as cruises through the Caribbean and the Panama Canal.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Hilda S. Mercun of Oneonta, his sisters-in-law, Eleanor Mercun of Toms River, NJ, and Bella Mercun of Union City, NJ; a niece, Virginia Mercun of Wallington, NJ, and two nephews, John (Marie) Mercun of Point Pleasant Beach, NJ, and their children Caroline and John, and Louis (Christina) Mercun of Bayonne, NJ and their children Carla Marie and Anthony.
He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Louis A. and John Mercun, and two nephews, Robert and Kenneth Mercun.
A funeral mass will be held on Friday November 16, 2012 at 10:15AM in St. Mary’s Church with the Rev. Bernard Ampong, parochial vicar, officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons with military honors.
Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 5 to 7 at which time the family will be in attendance.
