He was born February 5, 1947 in Hammond, Indiana the son of Kenneth George and Beatrice (Loudon) Stepp.
Joe graduated from Hillsborough High School, Hillsborough, Florida. Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Army until his honorable discharge in 1971. While in the US Army he received a diploma from the US Army Security Agency.
For 20 years, Joe was a Juvenile Aid Officer/Detective for the Oneonta Police Department. He retired in 1992.
On July 30, 2005, he married Susan Hansen in Zephyrhills, Florida.
He loved to read and go fishing. He was dedicated to helping others especially children. But his greatest joy was his family. He loved spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.
Joe was a 50 year member of the American Legion Post 166 in Laurens; the Oneonta Police Benevolent Association; the LEAF Council of Alcoholism and the New York State Police Juvenile Officers Association.
He received the New York State Cross for Conspicuous Service and the ARCOM.
Joseph is survived by his loving wife, Susan H. Stepp, Laurens; mother, Beatrice Gibson, Tampa, FL; 2 children, Lee Stepp, Trumansburg and Kelly (John) Miller, Springfield, VA and their mother, Yvonne Stepp, Laurens; 2 step children, Pete (Janette) Buchanan, Lutz, FL and Julie Crawford, Zephyrhills, FL; 7 grandchildren, Gage Stepp, Jack and Dania Miller, John Crawford, Brianna Buchanan and Riley and Lathan Crawford; 3 sisters, Barbara (Sandy) Futch, Temple Terrace, FL, Constance Stepp, Tampa, FL and Terri Stepp, Tampa, FL; as well as many nieces nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, Kenneth Stepp.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street, Oneonta from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at 11:00 AM in the funeral home.
For those who wish memorial donations may be made to either the American Legion Post #1688 with a request for volunteer services or to the Boy Scouts of America Troop 10, Laurens, New York 13796 in loving memory of Joseph Lee Stepp.
