ONEONTA - Laura Belle (McLean) Stanton, 88, of Oneonta, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at the Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown.

She was born on February 7, 1925 in Harpersfield, New York, the daughter of the late Leslie and LuLa (Goss) McLean. On July 24, 1969, Laura married Guy Stanton in Hartwick, New York. They celebrated 23 years of marriage until Guy’s passing in 1993.

Laura had a very strong and passionate faith in God. Her calling in life was to reach out and spread the gospel to young children and help them to understand God’s teachings. Through her work with the Child Evangelism Fellowship, Inc., she traveled all over the area teaching the gospel to and effecting hundreds of children through Good News Clubs and various other spiritual activities related to CEF. Her and her husband, Guy, also spent several summers as counselors and leaders at the Mid-State Baptist Camp in North Blenheim, New York. She was a devote member of the East Worcester Baptist Church.

When she had some free time to herself, she enjoyed crocheting and was a very accomplished pianist. But the thing she loved most was the time she got to spend with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Laura is survived by her children, Dawn Southern of Raleigh, North Carolina, James Dean, and his wife Midge, of Sidney, Lucy Gonzalez, and her husband Miguel, of Boynton Beach, Florida, Larry Dean, and his wife Donna, of Okeechobee, Florida, and Doreen M. Dean of Milford.

She is also survived by 18 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 1 great great-grandchild, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Laura was predeceased by her sister, Loretta McLean, and her first husband, Harold W. Dean.

Friends and family may call from 6pm to 8pm on Monday, February 10, 2014 at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street, Oneonta, at which time the family will receive guests.

A funeral service will be held at 1pm on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Paul Timmerman, Pastor of the East Worcester Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will take place in the spring in the Mt. Vision Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Laura’s family kindly requests that charitable donations be made in her memory to the Child Evangelism Fellowship Inc., P.O. Box 348, Warrenton, MO 63383 or by visiting their website:

I will miss my Grandma but I know she's with the Lord in a better place, and those of us who know her Saviour Jesus will see her again.

I only met Laura in her last days, but she touched my heart deeply. She found a way to laugh at herself despite her surroundings. Bless you dear Laura ~ I know you will be very happy in your new life. I will listen for your singing.
