Margaret Rita Hughes, 92, of Oneonta, passed away Sunday, May 8, 2022, at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born December 12, 1929, in Oneonta NY, the daughter of Gertrude and Russell Alger. She married William H. Hughes on Dec. 3, 1949, in Oneonta where together they created their loving family and home. Margaret, “Peggy” lived in Oneonta for most of her life. She graduated from Oneonta High School.
She worked as a telephone operator and enjoyed her work but loved the people she worked with even more. She led an active lifestyle of swimming, golfing, and traveling. Some of her fondest memories were family beach vacations to the Outer Banks. She was a sports enthusiast. She could be found traveling many miles to see her boys play baseball or grandchildren play their sports of interest. She continued this love by being an avid Yankee fan.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Rennie and Larry Brown of Oneonta, Peg Hughes and John Bennett, of Concord, California, William Jr. and Paula Hughes of Madison, Maine, Joseph and Jane Hughes of Afton NY, Helen “Chickie” and Jack Mateosky of Mount Pleasant, SC; and her grandchildren, Janet and Heather Brown, Joey, Tyler and Beth Ann Hughes and William Mateosky.
A celebration of life of Margaret Hughes will be held at the family home on Saturday, July 9th, 2022, from 2pm-5pm. A private burial will be held in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery prior. Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to a charity of choice or to the Bruce Jester Memorial Baseball Scholarship.
