Surrounded by love, she learned the true values of living a good life. She was brought up in the Lutheran faith. Mary lived a quiet but fulfilled life in the luscious, mountain realms of upstate New York. Born in Stamford, NY to the late Charles and Ruth Blazer, she had one sibling, her brother, David Henry whom she loved dearly. He passed in 2000 from heart failure.
Her father was a hard-working railroad man; and later in life, owned a ski resort in Scotch Valley. Her mother, a devoted, sweet, caring, strong woman taught Mary all the finesse of being a good homemaker, neighbor, wife and, how to bake up the best pies in the county. Mary’s speciality pie was her scrumptious Lemon Meringue Pie. But all her pies were amazingly tasty creations. Over her lifetime, Mary was afforded many accolades for her pies.
Mary attended SUNY University in Oneonta, NY and went on to graduate school in Education. In 1948 while attending her education classes, she was invited to a party and met “Dusty”, Roger Charles Dorn. It was love at first sight for the both of them and they were soon married in a “fairytale-like Church ceremony” in Stamford, NY in 1950.
Dusty and Mary were blessed with two healthy, rambunctious boys, Roger John, “Rog”, and Gary Joseph, “Gar”, whom Mary doted upon. They were the “apple” of Mary’s eyes. Roger went on to attain his Aerobatic Pilot’s License, study theater and Real Estate (like his father). He eventually wound up in Texas where he met his true love, Shawn Clark, whom he married and remained in Texas with. And Gary attended university with a major in Horticulture and remained in Oneonta until this day..
Dusty broke Mary’s heart when he passed away in 1992 from a major heart attack. Now straddled with two young men to continue to raise without their father, Mary fell back on her education and attained a position in teaching at SUNY University, where she continued that career until she retired at the unimaginable age of 85.
She once again was heartbroken when her eldest son, Roger, passed away from cancer in 2015. But Gary, her youngest stayed ever present by her side through to the end. And John Seider, Roger’s best friend for years, whom Mary considered her “unadapted son” and his wife, Susanna remained near to assist where needed. Likewise, Emily Kirsch availed herself often to assist Mary with many things, especially those involving technology. The family extends particular gratitude to them for their continued devotion to Mary throughout.
Mary is survived by her son, Gary, and her two nephews, Ted Blazer, along with his two children, Christian & Mary-Lauren (“Mel”), and Andy & Audrey Blazer along with their son, Andy II. She had many dear, lifelong friends, some of whom have gone before her; and those who remain behind, have wonderful, fond memories of her. She will be deeply missed. But those who know her are comforted in the knowledge that she is finally reunited with her beloved husband, “Dusty”, her son, “Rog”, her brother, Dave, her sister-in-law, “Peg”, and her dearest parents.
May she rest in peace!
