

He was born on November 27, 1941 in Binghamton the son of Joseph E. and Ethel May (Tilford) O’Mara. He graduated from Otego Central School in 1959. He married Liv Ragnhild General on February 8, 1964 in St. Mary’s Church, Oneonta.
Mike, a 4th generation railroader, retired in 1994 after 34 years of service with the D&HRR. At the time of his retirement he was a clerk, and held previous positions as an assistant trainmaster, and trainmaster.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Church, a 55 year member of the Otego Fire Department where he held the distinct honor of being the youngest member elected to an officer’s position. He rose up through the ranks, and was Chief of the Department from 1980- 1986.
Mike was the recipient of the Gary Goodier Award for service and commitment to fire service.
Amongst other interests, he was a NASCAR and Yankee fan. He loved to read and was considered an avid history buff.
He will be remembered for his quick wit and one liners.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Liv O’Mara of Otego; his children, Solveig Elizabeth O’Mara Perry and her husband Tim of Laurens, Michael Eugene O’Mara, Jr. and his wife Melanie of Otego, Mollie Frances Sullivan and husband Fred of Otego, GYSGT/USMC ret, Sean Patrick O’Mara and wife Charlene of Otego, SMSGT Catherine Ann O’Mara of Great Falls, MT, and Joseph Bernard O’Mara and wife Rhonda of Cortland, as well as numerous grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
He is also survived by a sister, Colleen Ann Gau and husband, John of New Market, AL, and a sister-n-law, Sara Jane O’Mara of Waterloo, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Dennis Joseph and Bernard Arthur O’Mara.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at 11:00 AM in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home 14 Grand St., Oneonta, NY 13820.
Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Otego.
Friends may call on Monday, April 13, 2015 from 5 to 7PM at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta at which time the family will be in attendance.
