Richard H. Homan

Richard Harold Homan, 90, former Tri-Town area resident, passed peacefully Sunday, August 18, 2019 in Fox Nursing Home. Born June 30, 1929, in Silver Creek, New York, to Harold E. and Beulah Matteson Homan, Richard graduated high school there in 1947, then attended Coyne Electrical School, Chicago. He served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. On May 31, 1952, Richard married Shirley Allerton who predeceased him in 2010.
A lineman, then planner, with Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. for 35 years, he retired in 1988 and joined Shirley at the Genesee Country Museum. There he honed his artisan skills as tinsmith and blacksmith. An avid woodworker who built and renovated homes in New York and Virginia, he enjoyed sawmill working and worship with Mennonites in Virginia, music, art, dancing with Tri-Town Dance Club, golfing and hunting.
A member of the Masonic Lodge, Richard served as master in Avon Springs Lodge, Avon, NY and Hanover Lodge, Forestville, NY.
His affiliation with the Episcopal Church included trustee work and singing at Saint Mary’s, Gowanda, NY and Zion, Avon, NY, with most recent attendance at Saint Matthew’s, Unadilla, NY. Surviving are daughters: Cheryl Homan, Elmira, NY, Denise Marshall(Stephan) Mount Upton, NY, and Sonja Griffith(John) Port Orange, FL; grandchildren Gareth Marshall(Meredith) Unadilla, NY, Talia Marshall-Hawkins(Jerry) Bainbridge, NY and Libby Marshall, Mount Upton, NY, Tina Griffith-Maessen(Lex), Netherlands, J.R. Griffith(Kelly) Colorado Springs, CO; great grandson, Damien Borowski, Bainbridge, NY; sisters Jackie Fetner(Biggs), Virginia, Roberta Moger(Blair), Florida and Beth Smallwood(Dick), Virginia.
Besides his parents and wife, Richard was preceded in death by his infant daughter Tina Charlotte Homan.
A celebration of Richard’s life will be held Saturday, October 5, 2019 at 10:30a.m.
The Celebration will take place at First United Church, Silver Creek, NY.
There will be a light lunch following the celebration.
