

Richard was born on December 22, 1930 in Syracuse, to Jessie Case Schadt and Arthur Schadt. He attended Syracuse University achieving all three of his degrees including a PhD.
He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army in 1952. He served during the Korean War and as a reserve officer until his retirement in 1990 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
He was a professor of history at the Castleton State College in Vermont. He later taught at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York. He spent the greater part of his life teaching at SUNY, Oneonta. He loved both of his careers and gave his best to them.
He will be remembered by his students and colleagues as an inspirational teacher. He spent his retirement years in travel and enjoyment of his family.
Richard is survived by his wife of 59 years, Georgia Schadt of Oneonta; his three children, Valerie Schadt, Audrey Schadt and Robert Schadt and his beloved wife, Susan Mahlke; his beloved granddaughters, Elspeth Tupelo and Sonrisa Mahlke Schadt.
He is also survived by his sister, Jean Schneider and nieces, Tracy, Linda, Terry and Gail.
There will be no calling hours.
A Life Appreciation Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at the First Presbyterian Church, 296 Main Street, Oneonta, with Rev. Mark Montfort, pastor, officiating.
Interment will be at the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia at a later date.
