William F. Hughes

December 3, 1925September 10, 2020

Dr. William F. Hughes, 94, was welcomed into Heaven on Thursday, September 10, 2020, where he was reunited with his loving wife of 62 years, Louise. A native of Bolivar, NY, Dr. Hughes was a longtime resident of Olean, NY where he and Louise raised their six children. More recently, he had been living in Slingerlands, NY and Cooperstown, NY in order to be closer to family.

Dr. Hughes served in the Navy during World War II and the Army in the Korean War.. After receiving his medical degree from Georgetown University, he began his 40 year career as a pediatrician in Olean.

Dr. Hughes was a proud and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who was happiest when spending time with family, especially when playing card games with his grandchildren. He had a lifelong love of growing gladiolus, cheering on the Buffalo Bills and playing duplicate bridge with Louise as his partner. They were members of bridge clubs in the Olean area, New Smyrna Beach, Florida and Slingerlands.

He was a devout Catholic and longtime member of St. John's Church, Olean, NY, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister as well as volunteered in other parish ministries. Following his retirement, Dr. Hughes was an active member of Saint Vincent de Paul Society in addition to supporting other charitable organizations related to his Catholic faith.

Dr. Hughes will be greatly missed by all those fortunate to have known him. He will be remembered as a caring physician, generous and trustworthy friend, and devoted family man. Dr. Hughes is survived by his children, Dr. Kathleen McCarthy and her husband Joseph, Dr. Joseph Hughes and his wife Diana, Dr. Stephen Hughes and his wife Cindy, Mary Hughes Dirr, Jane Hughes, and William Hughes Jr. and his wife Kshama. He is also survived by his sixteen grandchildren for whom he always held a special place in his heart: Andrew, Kathryn, Stephanie, Emilee, Megan, Molly, Elizabeth, Peter, Lauren, Matthew, Monica, Marcus, Isabella, Julia, Tara and Nicholas, as well as four great-grandchildren: Lucas, Emmy, Mason and Parker.

A Memorial Mass will be held at a future date. Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made in Dr. Hughes' name to the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, 441 North Union Street, Olean, NY.

To the entire Hughes family, I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your father and grandfather, Dr. Hughes. He had a unique combination of traits -- warm, kind, and a talented physician -- that will remain in my memory for years to come. Although I couldn't have put it into words as a child, thinking back, there was always a feeling of acceptance coming from him. I was sure he "got" me. His many patients must have felt the same way. Olean was quite lucky to have him.

I hope that wonderful memories will help to ease the burden of your loss. Your Dad/Grandfather will be missed.
With love,
Cara S. Lown

To all the Hughes Family members-Our heartfelt condolences to you on the passing of Uncle Bill. He was a kind and generous man, brilliant physician but down to earth and he possessed a heart of gold. We remember when he and Aunt Louise visited us when we lived in Connecticut on a trip to visit other members of the family. That was so typical of them- going out of their way for family!

What great tributes are posted all over this site-- and yet they still did not do him full justice--Such a wonderful man cannot be contained in mere words! Uncle Bill and you remain in our prayers. Ken and Joan Walters

I also have fond memories of Dr. Hughes and family at the Bartlett CC and as an adult working in healthcare at St. Francis and Olean General. He was a great pediatrician and gentleman -always so professional. Prayers to all and may your memories fill the void.

So sorry to hear about your dad. Mom, Mary Ann, was very proud to have such a great Dr. as her first cousin. He was a wonderful pediatrician when I was a child and for my kids as well. Sorry we have lost touch. Your parents were lovely folks and I know they will be missed!

I remember after the birth of my second child, I was exhausted and in tears. Dr. Hughes was so very kind and compassionate. He was also my pediatrician growing up as well as my brothers and sisters. He is truly a legend for generations. God bless his family and rest in peace Dr. Hughes!

Oh my, I remember Dr. Hughes very fondly. He was a warm, caring, compassionate and loving human being and a wonderful pediatrician. I was so very sad when I was too old for him to continue being my doctor. If I remember correctly he also always wore bow ties. Even at 52 yrs old I still remember and talk about him. One memory of him was when I woke up one Saturday morning when we were supposed to go on a family road trip, but I woke up with the mumps while I was upset about the trip being postponed I was happy (oddly enough) because I got to see Dr. Hughes. He always made me feel better even when I felt horrible. My sincerest condolences to the Hughes family and gratitude for sharing him with all of the kids in Olean he took care of.

My brother in law was one of the finest people, one could meet, and was loved by the Arnold family from our first meeting. That same love between us transcended the generations of our family. Our son delighted in a visit that introduced him to Niagara Falls and gladioli gardening (Uncle Bill’s hobby).
I manage my feelings of grief by envisioning Bill in heaven with Louise.
Love and prayers for my nieces, nephews and their loved ones as they grieve!
Rest In Peace Bill! 💔
