Antoinette “Babe” Buma went to be with Jesus on July 26, 2021 at the age of 85. Babe was born October 22, 1935 to the late Edward and Tina Lautenbach in Artesia, California. She grew up among the original Dutch dairy farms in Bellflower and graduated from Bellflower Christian High School in 1953.
Babe married the love of her life, Cory Buma, on September 17, 1954. They were married for over 40 years until he passed away in 1995. Babe and Cory were a working couple but reserved a month off every summer to camp and fly fish all over the northwest with their kids. They continued for years visiting favorite fishing holes in Idaho and Wyoming as empty nesters.
As charter members of Calvary Christian Reformed Church, now known as CrossPoint/Chino, Babe and Cory shared a passion for Christian ministry. They were always active at church and volunteered with the Match-2 prison program. M-2 matched fellow Christians with local inmates at both the California Institutions for Men and Women and helped inmates get back on their feet after release. Babe worked as an administrator for M-2 for 18 years and later for Steve Russo, a teen ministry, 3Way Thrift and Inland Christian Home. More than anything Babe was sustained by her faith in Jesus Christ. Her life was filled with prayer for family and friends and she considered it her privilege to share Christ’s love with anyone with whom she came into contact.
Babe is survived by her son Vince Buma and daughters Lori Pry and Lani Bethe. She is remembered with love by her 5 cherished grandchildren Melissa and Matthew Buma, Nik and Madi Pry and Olivia Bethe; sisters Annie Hogan, Drike DeJong, Trice Innocenti and brother John Lautenbach, son in laws Barry Pry and Don Bethe and many nieces and nephews and a loving group of friends.
Funeral services will be at CrossPoint/Chino at 10am on Monday August 9, 2021. Burial at Forrest Lawn/Covina at 2pm.
Babe always supported mission work so in lieu of flowers, donations may be mailed by check “in memory of Babe Buma” to CrossPoint/Missions at 6950 Edison Ave, Chino, CA 91710 or Samaritan’s Purse by going to their website at samaritanspurse.org.
