

Carlton Stewart Martz was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He was an upstanding member of his community and touched the lives of many throughout his 84 years. He had a passion for studying politics, genealogy research, and traveling to different countries to immerse himself into new cultures. Carl also known as Chip (his childhood nickname), made significant contributions in education through his writing for the Bill of Rights in Action periodical for over 40 years. He was also a high school history teacher and librarian for over 30 years. Family and friends will remember him as an extremely intelligent, well spoken, family oriented man who pursued all of his endeavors whole heartedly.
Carl enjoyed spending time with family and friends especially during the holidays and the summertime. The family had many traditions and created many memories together that will forever be cherished by his loved ones. Carl happily gave unwavering support and encouragement to his friends and family. He was extremely proud of his daughters, his grandchildren, and all of his nieces and nephews. He enjoyed long conversations over coffee discussing current events, baseball, politics, and everything going on in the lives of his family. Carl was an avid reader of biographies and fiction, and enjoyed being a member of his local book club in his later years. He was also a Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter fan. Carl was a gifted gardener who spent endless hours throughout the years growing citrus fruits and vegetables that he shared with everyone. He also adored and lovingly cared for his cats.
Carl was a dedicated husband to his wife Rose for 36 years until her passing in 2003. They were both educators and met while working as teachers at Edgewood High School. They raised two daughters together, enjoyed traveling together and especially enjoyed going on cruises. Carl is survived by his daughters Sarah and Jennifer, and his beloved grandchildren Camille and Alex.
Carl leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and compassion that will be carried on by his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
