Clara was born in Huntington, Indiana on October 2, 1921 to Charles John Pohler and Hazel Leah Martin Pohler. In January of 1944 she married Robert J. Poiry. They moved to California shortly after the war ended and settled in Ontario, California. Clara was hired as a cashier at the White Way Market in Pomona where she worked many years until she retired in the 1970’s.
Clara enjoyed working in her garden and she had quite the green thumb. She had many varieties of roses and a number of fruit trees. We literally enjoyed the fruits of her labor through the scrumptious jams and jellies she made. Being idle was not something she tolerated well and often we would find her at the sewing machine or with needle and floss embroidering another beautiful design. She had a keen sense of style and was always impeccably dressed.
Her loving nature exemplified her strong faith in the Lord. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She cherished her family and friendships. Her priority in life was to love and care for others, at which she excelled. This is the legacy she leaves behind.
Clara, “Gertie”, is survived by her daughter, Dawn (Lawrence) Shell; grandsons Neil Shell and Jay (Jessica) Shell and great grandson Patrick Shell.
We miss her tremendously but the example of her loving and gentle nature will forever remain within our hearts. We will never forget this gracious, elegant, and sweet woman.
Relatives and friends will gather together to remember and honor the life of this gentle and faithful woman at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ontario, June 20, 2026 at 2:00 p.m.
