Aunt Evie was the first person who welcomed our family to Ontario in 1958. My father Cliff Wilkinson was to be the minister at their church for the next five years. Aunt Evie and Uncle H became our family and because of their kindness, compassion and love those memories are treasured. 
 Aunt Evie was our second mom. She took us to a new theme park down the road called Disneyland. We would drive right up to the main gate and spend hours at the park ... roller coasters were her favorite. In this day and age it is hard to believe we went three/four time a week for less than 10 cents a ride. There were so many sleepovers at Aunt Evie's house, Christmas, dinners, birthday celebrations, picnics, church dinners and lots of trips to the beach for a day of sun and fun.
The five years flew by and we returned to Canada. Distance did not break the friendship. At Christmas, cans of California olives would be on our table thanks to care packages from Aunt Evie complete with photos and a long letter. The best Christmas treat was when the phone rang with Aunt Evie and Uncle H on the line.
Hello... this Evie how is everyone.... She would talk about everyone in California and on those cold wintery nights it was a ray of sunshine. Today, our home is filled with poinsettias and living greenery at Christmas, a tribute to those wonderful days and a reminder of Aunt Evie love of life, laughter and family.
Her letters were always full of news about Uncle H, Suzanne and her family along with Mike and his family and the happenings with the California police (Big Mike and Little Mike). We heard about marriages, babies, the grand kids and then their marriages and babies and as they grew, all about their new families. We thought how magical that she lived on the same street all these years and everyone could drop by. Aunt Evie never missed an opportunity to write and chat on the phone and fill us in all the happenings of her family. One Christmas, she wrote every single name on the back of the photo of her family, over 100 names! WOW. She was so proud of her family and loved each and every one.
When my daughter Helen was born Aunt Evie and Uncle H were the first to call. They made a trip to Edmonton to meet her and had a wonderful holiday reuniting with my parents. They laughed, shared stories and recalled those good old days.
My daughter and I had the opportunity a few years back to stop in for a visit with Aunt Evie when Helen was in a competition at the California Highland Games and we spent a special afternoon looking at pictures, telling stories, laughing and remembering. Words cannot tell you how much that afternoon meant to us.
She lived each day as though it was a present from God and showed us how to celebrate and give thanks for this gift God had given. To paraphrase Aunt Evie's words, every day was a pretty day". Her faith gave her strength. It gave her compassion, humility and caring.  She knew that the greatest gift is love and she faced life's challenges with the most powerful of swords... Love.
At this time we are filled with sadness but each of us can bring light to this darkness by picking up her sword and continuing to face our earthly challenges with the compassion, caring and love for others she shared with us.
Aunt Evie was an angel placed on this Earth by God now God has called her home. Let us pick up her Sword of Love and continue to make the world a better place because Evelyn Mae Hoehn through her life taught us to love one another. 

Thank you for being my Aunt Evie.

Her life was an example of sweetness, loving and graciousness. She brought so much joy to my wife and I.
